Aiea Public Library closed for renovation

The Aiea Public Library, at 99-143 Moanalua Road, will be closed for renovation, starting today and lasting through Sept. 18.

A new circulation desk will be installed and lighting will be improved.

The book drop will remain open, but library patrons are advised to use the Pearl City or Salt Lake-Moanalua libraries for regular service.

Donations should not be left outside the Aiea library. For information, call 586-3620.

QUEST administrator leaves for Nevada

Charles "Chuck" Duarte has left his position as administrator of the Med-QUEST Division of the state Human Services Department to head the Medicaid program in Carson City, Nev.

He administered Med-QUEST from July 1997 until July 14. He was previously executive director of the Kalihi-Palama Health Center.

Steven Kawada, acting administrator of Med-QUEST's Policy and Program Development Office, has replaced Duarte as acting administrator of the division.

Japanese consul to address society

Gotaro Ogawa, consulate general of Japan, will address the annual membership dinner of the Japan-America Society of Hawaii on Sept. 14.

A 5:30 p.m. registration and 6 p.m. business meeting will precede the 6:30 p.m. dinner in the Hawaii Ballroom of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

Cost will be $100 for an individual seat. Sponsor tables of 10 seats per table are available at $1,500, $2,500 and $3,500. Call 524-4450 by Thursday for reservations.

Home-invasion suspect arrested for threatening

A 20-year-old Kailua man, who will be tried in October for a July 8 home-invasion robbery in Manoa Valley, was arrested today for first-degree terroristic threatening.

Shaun C. Rodrigues surrendered to police this morning.

The threatening case stems from a July 6 incident at 2670 Hillside Ave.

Three witnesses identified Rodrigues as the man who allegedly pointed a gun at them after he was confronted outside the residence, police said.

The witnesses had returned home to find a ladder against the home.

Rodrigues was also identified by two women victims in the home-invasion robbery that occurred two days later at an Oahu Avenue address.

At a preliminary hearing, Rodrigues' mother, stepfather and brother testified he was at home during the robbery. Rodrigue

Police, HFD investigate two fires in apartment

Police and fire investigators are trying to determine what caused two fires to break out at the same Hausten Street apartment last night.

Fire crews responded to 713 Hausten St. at 8:39 p.m. They extinguished the blaze, which was confined to the sofa in the living room, fire officials said. The fire is believed to have been caused by a cigarette left unattended.

At 10:24 p.m., fire crews returned to the same unit. The second fire, in the same room, caused $40,000 in damage. It is still being investigated.

No injuries were reported.

Man critically injured in blaze at his residence

A 21-year-old man suffered second-degree burns and was critically injured in a house fire yesterday in Ewa Beach.

Neighbors heard a loud explosion moments before the fire started at 91-733B Oneula Place at 5:06 p.m., police said. Police found the injured resident in the backyard.

He remains at Straub Hospital in critical condition with burns to his face, hands and feet.

The blaze, which started in the bedroom, caused $80,000 in damage and is being investigated.
