Friendly neighbors

For the fifth year in a row, Beretania Florist will celebrate Good Neighbor Day Wednesday by giving away 15,000 roses in bunches of a dozen to anyone who visits the shop while supplies last.

Those picking up the roses are asked to keep one for themselves and give away the remaining 11 in the spirit of renewing friendships or making a friend, and by doing so, help to create a friendlier, more compassionate community.

The roses will be available at all three Beretania Florist locations:

Bullet At 1293 S. Beretania St., open from 7 a.m.
Bullet At 333 Queen St. open 7 a.m.
Bullet At the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, from 8 a.m.

Good Neighbor Day is celebrated in the United States and Canada as a day of goodwill. The international event is sponsored by FTD.

Asian crafts talk set

Dusty Gruver will give a talk about the history and contemporary crafts of weaving and needlework in Southeast Asia 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Academy Arts Center at Linekona, 1111 Victoria St.

He will be showing examples of baskets, beading, textiles and costumes during the free event.

The talk is sponsored by the Hawaii Stitchery and Fiber Arts Guild. For more information, call 395-3537.

Who's snoring now?

The Honolulu Zoo is registering participants for its next overnighter, "Snooze in the Zoo."

The event begins 5:30 p.m. Sept. 23 and ends at 9 a.m. the next day. Between sunset and dawn, there will be dinner, walking tours, storytelling, campfire, and a behind-the-scenes peek at the animals to find out who sleeps, who's wide awake, who snores and who dreams.

The cost to attend is $35 per person or $30 for Honolulu Zoological Society members. Campers are asked to bring their own tent and sleeping bags.

For reservations or information, call 971-7195.
