UH football’s Lee
OK after surgery


University of Hawaii assistant football coach Ron Lee underwent successful bypass surgery yesterday at Straub, according to a source at the hospital.

No date was set for his release. Lee, 56, suffered what was described as a mild heart attack Monday.

Sears Cup for BYUH

The Brigham Young University-Hawaii national champion women's volleyball team and women's tennis team were honored yesterday with Sears Cups.

The Sears Cup is presented to teams winning national titles in any of the three NCAA divisions or the NAIA. The Seasider women's volleyball and tennis teams accomplished that during the 1999-2000 school year.

HPU loses close one

The Hawaii Pacific University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Western Washington yesterday in Seattle.

Maile Beck scored the only goal on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 41st minute.

Volleyball traffic alert

Traffic patterns for three night University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball games next week will be affected by resurfacing that will close westbound lanes of the H-1 freeway from the Kapiolani off-ramp to Punchbowl Street.

Because the work is going on from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, it will affect traffic after the following games:

Bullet Monday (Labor Day), Wahine vs. UCLA at 5 p.m.
Bullet Thursday, Wahine vs. Oregon at 7 p.m.
Bullet Sept. 14, University of California at Santa Barbara vs. University of Nevada-Las Vegas at 7 p.m.

Vehicles exiting Waialae Gate will not be able to enter H-1 westbound. Traffic will be directed to King Street via Old Waialae Road. Vehicles leaving Lower Campus Gate will be directed makai on University Avenue toward Beretania Street and Kapiolani or mauka on University, then westbound to Dole Street toward Wilder Avenue.

Waipio soccer opening

AYSO, Section 7, invites players, families, coaches, referees and volunteers to participate in the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park grand opening tomorrow.

The first 1,500 AYSO players wearing an AYSO soccer jerseys will get a mini soccer ball.

The first 50 AYSO coaches with their team (four or more players) in AYSO jerseys) will receive a special coach's gift.

Minor first in age group

Wendy Minor of Honolulu finished first in the 55-59 age group in the Ironman Canada Triathlon Sunday at Penticton, British Columbia.

Her time was 13 hours, 57 minutes and 53 seconds for the 2.4-mile swim, 122-mile bike race and 26.2-mile run.

Surf series finale

The final event in the Ocean Club Surfing Series is today and Sunday at Kuhio Beach at the Queen's surf break.

More than 180 amateur and professional longboard surfers will battle for year-end ratings.

The leaders in the Van's Pro Division after three events are Duane Desoto, Kanoa Dahlin, Danny Kalahiki, Joey Valentin, Bonga Perkins and Kapono Nahinu.
