After 120 minutes of sometimes good, sometimes exciting and sometimes indifferent soccer, both head coaches know their teams need more work.

Boise State's Steve Lucas put a positive spin on his team's shortcomings.

"We're very young and to play 120 minutes against an experienced team . . . no one likes a tie, but everything is fixable," Lucas said. "We did create chances. I would be upset if we didn't create chances."

"We didn't play well. We should have done much better," said Hawaii's Pinsoom Tenzing.

Twice the Wahine rallied on goals by freshman striker Arlene Devitt, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie in the season opener for both teams at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The crowd of 1,025 was the biggest ever for a Wahine match, and they saw the game go through two overtime periods.

Boise State scored both goals when UH had numerical superiority on defense.

Abigail Bernards, a talented freshman defender, scored the Broncos' first goal with a fine run up the middle through three UH defenders. She shifted the ball from the right foot to the left, used her body as a shield and left-footed the ball inside the right post just before the half.

Devitt tied the score at 1-1 when she took a Tiffany Makue pass on a semi-breakaway, slipped the ball past on-rushing BSU goalkeeper Jeanne Curtice-Orm, then rolled it into the net.

The goal ignited a desire for better ball control by the Wahine who had looked disorganized since the 20-minute mark of the first half.

That's when speedy UH defender Carmel Hurley had made one of her patented 50-yard dashes only to end up unconscious on the ground after colliding with a diving Curtice-Orm.

Hurley suffered a concussion. It's not known how long she will be out.

The Broncos took advantage of a stand-still Wahine defense on a free kick from the right side for a 2-1 lead. From near the penalty kick spot, Brittany Zoellner drove the ball past UH goalkeeper Demarre Sanchez.

Four minutes later, Devitt, with her back to the goal, received a pass from Wanette Miyashiro, turned to her left and drilled a shot into the upper right corner of the net from 35 yards out with her right foot for the 2-2 tie.

"There are few kids who can settle the ball, know where they are, and take a crack at it," Tenzing said.

Zoellner hit the crossbar with less than two minutes left in regulation.

In the two overtime periods, Sanchez made two one-on-one, game-saving stops, and Curtice-Orm made one.
