passion for sport

Punahou students who cut class to go surfing in the days when Peter Cole, 69, and Fred Van Dyke, 70, were teaching there ran the risk of being caught by their teachers paddling out.

Cole and Van Dyke are two of the stars of "Surfing for Life," a 68-minute documentary on surfing and healthy aging co-produced by David Brown and Roy Earnest.

The film, which won the Golden Maile for best documentary and the viewers' choice award at last year's Hawai'i International Film Festival, will screen at the Honolulu Academy of Arts at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets, at $5 general and $3 for academy members, are available the day of the screening at the front desk, or within a half-hour of showtime at the box office. For information, call 532-8768.

Cole and two other surfers featured in the film, Big Island physician Shay Bintliff, 64, and surfing pioneer John Kelly, 81, will be on hand opening night.

In his role as chairman of last year's HIFF jury, Newsweek critic David Ansen lauded the film for "its celebratory spirit" and "its wise and refreshing perspective on growing old."
