Sakata in running
for California
League honors

Star-Bulletin staff

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Hawaii's Lenn Sakata is being touted as a possible Coach of the Year in the California League.

According to sports reporter Kevin Eubanks of the Bakersfield Californian, "the award is easily Sakata's."

Sakata, a former major-leaguer who coaches the Bakersfield Blaze --the San Francisco Giants' Class-A affiliate -- "has taken a team that was pretty much thrown together by the Giants organization and has made them winners," Eubanks wrote in a recent article.

The Blaze is 35-24 this season.

The California League has had its share of future major-league stars throughout its history. Of the league's last 42 Rookie of the Year winners, 30 have played in the majors, including Kirby Puckett (1983), Mark McGwire (1985) and Gary Sheffield (1987).
