Food Network
cameo for Santa

HO, ho ho: It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, atMug shot least at the Halekulani. Each year, the hotel has a barefoot Santa arrive via canoe on the beach in front of the hotel. But in August? Television is a powerful medium, however, and Santa will be arriving via outrigger at 4:30 this afternoon, expressly for "In Food Today" on the Food Network ... While we're Ho, ho ho'ing, Don Ho called and left a voice message thanking me for showing up at his 70th birthday show featuring daughter Hoku. It was filmed live at Don Ho's Island Grill for broadcast on Channel 5. Ho also congratulated me for six years of columns since my Kaiser incarceration and ended in typically Don Ho fashion: "I hope it hasn't affected your sex life." ... KCTS, the Public Television station in Seattle, is developing a new public TV series with the working title, "The Japanese American Saga." Hawaii is involved in the project in that UH faculty member Chris Conybeare is co-producer for its research and development phase ...

Musical taste

THE tasty musical stylings of former isle performer Patrice Ka'ohi were heard along with her band at the California Wine Tasting Championship in Northern California. You may recall her as Patrice Schipa when she played at Il Fresco at Ward Centre. Her debut album of originals will be released before the year's end. It's being mixed at George Lucas' Skywalker Sound and features such guest artists as Alex de Grassi, Paul McCandless, Joe Craven and Gene Parsons, formerly of the Byrds. Ka'ohi's music was referred to in a recording industry newsletter as "Hawaiian Motown." ...

FIRST there were 562 scripts submitted to the Maui Writers Conference screenplay competition. Star-Bulletin columnist Charlie

Memminger, who dabbles in screenplays when not in other people's business, was thrilled to hear he'd made the semi-final cut to 44. Now comes even greater news -- his is one of eight to make the finals. A panel of judges consisting of agents, managers, producers and film execs will read the scripts (blindly) and pick a winner, to be announced on Sept. 4. Don't call him on that day -- he may be a bit on edge ...

SOMEONE mention winners? Michele Gima just said "Cheese" and her smiling photo, taken by dad Clint Gima of Maui, was the second award-winning picture selected in Kraft's "Just Say Cheese" photo contest. Dad's prize was a Fujifilm Digital FinePix 1400 zoom camera to get photos of his daughter and her award-winning smile ... Molly Shannon of "Saturday Night Live" counts among the characters she plays one "Sally O'Malley," the female cop who's 50 and proud of it. On the latest show, she beats up three younger cop recruits then poses and says, "Book 'em Dano, cause I'm 5-0." Proof yet again that "Book 'em Dano," is now fully part of the lexicon ...

Fancy schmancy

WE'VE come to know that "Emme and Friends" inevitably includes a chef, so one would think the well proportioned hostess, Emme

Tomimbang, would be enormous with so many chefs as "Friends." In past weeks she featured many of the top chefs in Hawaii such as Roy

Yamaguchi and Alan Wong. But the episode taped for Saturday on KGMB is a show culminating in a local feast prepared by Helen Chock of Helena's Hawaiian Food in Kalihi. Helen is 83 and one of only three local James Beard Award recipients. "Emme and Friends" airs Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ...
