Drug testing unlikely
at isle schools

Athletes in the Freer Independent School District in Texas are undergoing drug testing for the first time this year.

Keith Amemiya, Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive director, said he doesn't see drug testing of high school athletes as a national trend, and he doesn't foresee it happening any time soon in Hawaii high schools.

"However, if there's enough support for it, I'm sure the Board of Education, the leagues and the HHSAA will look at it closely," he said.

Parents of some of the Texas athletes are questioning why athletes are being tested if the general student population isn't.

Amemiya said they have a good point.

"Numerous studies show that those who participate in athletics are less likely to get involved in drugs and alcohol," Amemiya said.

"If we do decide to impose mandatory random drug testing, it would surprise me if we faced legal challenges," added Amemiya, an attorney.

Grappling with success

St. Louis wrestler Travis Lee had a productive summer, becoming an All-American in both Roman-Greco (fourth) and freestyle (sixth) in the 114-pound weight class at the junior national tournament in Fargo, N.D. The senior-to-be was joined on the trip by Troy Takahashi (St. Louis senior), Noah Amba (Kamehameha sophomore) and Jansen Fukuda (Hawaii Baptist senior).

They were coached by John Robinson (Radford), Todd Los Banos (St. Louis) and John Curley (Radford assistant).

Iolani boys' volleyball coach Mike Normand's staff is full of familiar names: former University of Hawaii men's coach Alan Rosehill and former Rainbow players Curt Vaughn and Aaron Wilton. ...
