St. Francis advances

St. Francis and three California teams head into the championship round of the Iolani Volleyball Invitational today as the top seeds.

Iolani, Punahou and two-time defending tournament champion Newport Harbor (Calif.) also made it through pool play by finishing second in their pools.

The four teams that win today resume play tomorrow, but the losers must play another match.

La Reina (Calif.) was the only team that didn't drop a game in pool play, winning eight games by an average score of 15-7.

Punahou and St. Francis play today at 2 p.m. Iolani and Harvard-Westlake (Calif.) tangle at 5.

Garcia halts Irons

Sunny Garcia won his third-round heat against fellow Hawaii surfer Andy Irons yesterday in the TC Lacanau Pro at Lacanau, France.

Garcia, the current Association of Surfing Professionals ratings leader, amassed the highest total of the day, as well as the best single wave score of 9.25.

Hawaii's Shane Dorian and Ross Williams also advanced but Hawaii's Kalani Robb was eliminated.

HPU wins soccer opener

Walea Kalama scored on a lob kick from five feet out in the 65th minute yesterday as host Hawaii Pacific University topped the College of Notre Dame, 1-0, in the men's soccer season opener for both teams.

Sea Warriors goalie Frederick Andreasson made two key saves in the second half to secure the lead.

HPU plays again tomorrow against Sonoma State at its Windward campus. Game time is 4 p.m.

Seasiders dropped in OT

The BYU-Hawaii men's soccer team lost, 1-0, in overtime to Sonoma St. yesterday in another season opener in Laie.

The Cossacks scored in the 101st minute, and outshot BYUH 29-11 for the game.

The Seasiders play the College of Notre Dame tomorrow in Laie at 11 a.m.

Aiea WS play suspended

The game between Aiea and Langley of British Columbia, Canada, in the Junior League World Series was suspended at 3-3 after 10 innings yesterday at Taylor, Mich., due to curfew.

The teams battled until just before midnight, Michigan time, before the game was called.

The two undefeated teams were to complete the game today, with the winner playing for the world championship of the 13-14 year old division tomorrow.

U.S. softballers to play here

The USA Olympic Softball team will play a series of exhibition games at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in early September.

Team USA will play the Women's Pro Softball League All-Stars Sept. 2 and 3. Former University of Hawaii slugger Dana Degen plays for the WPSL team.

Team USA will then play UH Sept. 6 and Hawaii Pacific University Sept. 7.

Tickets for the Sept. 3 and 6 games are $10. The Sept. 2 and 7 games are $8.

Hawaii trio in LPGA test

Hawaii's Dawn Kaneshiro, Julie Miyagi and Christel Tomori will be in the 162-women field for the Aug. 22-25 Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Venice, Fla., for golfers trying to land spots on the 2001 LPGA Tour.

The top 30 finishers in the 72-hole event will advance to the LPGA Tour's Final Qualifying Tournament at Daytona Beach, Fla., in October.

Ganir junior golf medalist

Maui's Kamden Ganir shot a tournament-best 3-over-par 74 to take boys' 15-17 honors in the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association's recent Junior Tour event at the Hilo Municipal course.

Mariel Kotake beat Rie Ganir in a playoff for the girls' 15-17 prize after they tied for first place at 83.

Other medalists were Ariel-Abraham Bolling (boys' 10-and-under), Kurt Nino (boys' 11-12), Shaun Felechner (boys 13-14), Jasmine Ching (girls' 11-12) and Kelly Nakashima (girls' 13-14).

Queens Surf amateur meet

The Hawaii Amateur Surfing Association/Crazy Shirts 2000-2001 Surf Series gets under way tomorrow and Sunday with a meet at Queens Surf, behind the Duke Kahanamoku statue.

Agbayani hits 10th homer

Hawaii's Benny Agbayani was one of four players to hit a home run for the New York Mets in a 13-2 romp over the Colorado Rockies at Shea Stadium last night.

Todd Zeile, Robin Ventura and Mike Bordick also homered for the Mets.

Agbayani hit a solo homer in the fifth inning and he also had a sacrifice fly in the game.
