Makiki park
cared for,
despite trash

Question: Who is supposed to maintain the small park at the Makiki Board of Water Supply pumping station? The wading pool is murky. There is a lot of broken glass in the pool. The grass hasn't been cut. There are beer bottles and wine bottles in there. The area is no longer safe for children.

Answer: We called the Board of Water Supply, and although it manages the land within the fenced-in pump station, the city Department of Parks and Recreation is responsible for maintenance of the land beyond the fence. William Balfour, city parks director, reported that a thorough cleaning project was done Aug. 2, including mowing and trimming of the lawn. The grass there is cut every 10 days. The ornamental fountain at the Archie Baker minipark is supposed to be maintained Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Q: Are there any plans to reprogram the traffic lights or reroute the traffic near the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Waimano Home Road, in the vicinity of the Pearl City Daiei and Sam's Club shopping centers? The light at Sam's Club never seems to stay green long enough to alleviate the logjam between Sam's Club and Waimano Home Road regardless of the time of day. A right turn lane at the post office might help. It seems the situation only will get worse when Home Depot builds a new store.

A: There are no immediate improvement plans for the eastbound traffic on Kamehameha Highway, said Marilyn Kali, Department of Transportation spokeswoman. But for westbound traffic two left turn lanes into Home Depot will be added. There also are plans to build three lanes going out of Home Depot.

To all those business and charities that keep sending unsolicited address labels, post and greeting cards, and calendars. I do not even open these types of mail.

Time share follow-up

Consolidated Resorts, which employs nearly 250 people in Hawaii and represents nine resorts in the islands and two in Las Vegas, said it has canceled its contract with a person who wrote Kokua Line and on July 12 signed a contract for one eight-day vacation in a resort on Maui. And a call to the prospective buyer confirmed that charges were removed from her credit card account. Consolidated said it did this although the contract language specifically states that all sales of this special promotion are final.

Marcus Baricuatro, Consolidated's vice president, said the consumer never did purchase an interval of time share. He added that Consolidated also earlier had moved the consumer's prepaid vacation from one resort to another because the buyer was unhappy with her original choice. Baricuatro said: "Consolidated Resorts has done business in Hawaii for nearly 20 years. We pride ourselves in our customer service and have more than 150,000 satisfied time-share owners."

Mahalo

To these kind strangers at the Kailua Daiei Store who showed this family the true aloha spirit. We had just purchased a television which was too big to get into our car. A beautiful lady offered to put it in her Mazda van and drive it to our home in Kaneohe. We thanked her but declined the generous offer. Within seconds, a couple with two little boys also offered to put it in their van and drive it to our home. We were overwhelmed at the kindness shown to us -- and taught our little boy a good lesson in helping others. Lucky, indeed, we live Hawaii. -- The Itos
