St. Francis strikes
at Iolani

St. Francis is the early surprise of the Iolani Volleyball Invitational.

After the first day of play yesterday, the Troubadours had won Pool B, edging two-time tournament defending champion Newport Harbor (Calif.).

St. Francis and Newport Harbor were both 5-2. In their head-to-head match, they split; St. Francis won 15-6 and Newport Harbor won 11-9.

For continued success in the tournament and the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, the Troubadours will depend on junior middle Elizabeth Narkon and senior outsides Kim Tano and Kalae Araujo.

"We knew they'd be strong. A lot of their girls play club," tournament director and Iolani coach Ann Kang said of St. Francis. "They're expected to contend in the ILH."

St. Francis is led by first-year varsity coach Sean Maskell, who is up from the junior varsity.

Mira Costa (Calif.) swept through Pool A yesterday.

Pools C and D play today, with action continuing tomorrow and concluding with Saturday's championship match at Iolani.

Crusaders unranked

The St. Louis School football team is rated No. 8 in the nation by foxsports.com, but it won't be ranked at all this season by a new Web site devoted strictly to high school sports.

Dave Krider, the national editor of HighWired.com, said he won't rank the Crusaders because they have players who are in their fifth year of high school.

"It's been a rule Ihad at USA Today the last 15 years," Krider said. "If a fifth-year kid appears in one minute of one game, he's out of my rankings.

"Iunderstand they did nothing wrong, that they're within league rules. But fifth-year high school students are college freshmen as far as I'm concerned. I'm sorry the situation came up, and hope everything will be cleared up by next year so they can be back in the Top 25."

"Rankings don't really matter," St. Louis coach Cal Lee said. "Anybody who worries about that, god bless 'em."

HighWired.com (www.highwired.com) launches next Monday.

"Our goal is to be a one-stop national prep sports site," said Pacific Coast regional editor Mitch Stephens, whose area of responsibility includes Hawaii. "We want to promote high school sports and inform readers."

Football videos available

Les Keiter, special assistant to the Aloha Stadium authority, said videotapes of all high school football games at the stadium will be available again this year.

They may be bought for $25 each by writing to P.O. Box 30666, Honolulu, HI 96820 and indicating what game is desired.

Also, anyone interested in joining Keiter's "Stadium Stars" announcing team can call him at 486-9549.
