Hawaii's Olympians  The Road to Sydney



Mililani swimmer
Keiko Price qualifies
for 50-meter semis

Former UCLA All-American and Mililani native Keiko Price continued her uphill quest this morning in Indianapolis to become the first Hawaii swimmer to make the Olympic team since 1976.

Price qualified for tonight's semifinals in the women's 50-meter freestyle with a 26.00 perfomance this morning for sixth place among 98 competitors in the preliminaries.

Dara Torres topped the prelims with a 25.23 folowed by Amy Van Dyken in 25.45. The U.S. will take only two swimmers to Sydney in the 50-meter freestyle. Price failed to qualify in the semifinals of the 100-meter freestyle on Sunday.

Former Stanford All-American Sabir Muhammad, expected by many to become the first African-American member of the U.S. Olympic swim team, has failed to qualify in either of his two events.

Muhammad, a Hawaii resident since late last year, finished last in the 100-meter freestyle final on Sunday night. Last night, he failed to make it through the semifinals of the 50-meter freestyle, his best event. Christian Hasbach beat out Muhammad for eighth place, finishing in 22.71 to Muhammad's 22.75.

Gary Hall was first in the semifinal in 21.91. Muhammad finished 15th in the morning preliminary in 23.22 while Hall topped the field in 21.92.

But Anthony Ervin of Valencia, Calif., is now being recognized as the first African-American to make the team. Finishing fifth in the 100-meter freestyle, he will likel;y swim the 400-meter relay. Ervin's father is 75 percent black while his mother is white.
