Lanai a hit
with Ebert

FILM critic Roger Ebert gave two thumbs upMug shot to the Lodge at Koele where he was guest speaker in the island's Visiting Artist Program. With him was his wife, Chaz, her daughter and son-in-law and the couple's three children. He's next off to Maui and then Thailand for a little R&R (taking time out from viewing films) before returning to Hawaii in November for the Honolulu International Film Festival, where he'll act as a juror. He missed last year's HIFF to attend a film festival in India ... High price to pay for partnership: Michael W. Perry told partner Larry Price as they celebrated their 17 years together that he'd probably spent more time with Price than his wife, Vickie ... Want to hear Hawaiian tunes sung in Chinese? The only person I know who does that is Mimy Chen, and you can catch her performing at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tower Records on Keeaumoku or Sunday at 1 p.m. on the Kahala Mall stage ...

Not so easy rider

WHEN David and Marianne Stubenberg retired and moved to Incline Village, the idea originally was to incline a lot. But ennui set in last year so they bought a huge motor home and set off to see the country. The two encountered hurricanes wherever they went. This year they picked up their respective Moms and started out again. You may have read of the fires all over the western United States? Well, that's where they were driving, and the fear of getting trapped overshadowed the haze that prohibited them from seeing the historic sights. What they did see were thousands and thousands of motorcycle riders, many with their "babes" topless on the back seat, heading to the annual cycle-orama at Sturgis, S.D., where an estimated 1 million people were gathering. They couldn't get near any biker bars in the area and hotels for 150 miles were booked as were the campgrounds. Only thing to do was to head off for more fire country. If the two ever invite you on a trip, you might think twice ...

CINCPAC historian Tom Gordon, who due to medical problems with his left arm has had to wear a sling for nearly a year, was surprised at his retirement luncheon Friday when virtually every military historian in Honolulu showed up -- all wearing arm slings in his honor ... "Rent" producer Kevin McCollum figured it would cost too much to dissemble his set and ship it back to the mainland, so he invited in tech honchos from Hawaii Opera Theatre and Diamond Head Theatre to help themselves to parts they can use later ...

TONIGHT'S live broadcast on K5-KINE from Don Ho's Island Grill will have the eatery's namesake, Don Ho, and his daughter, Hoku, performing live. Rip Taylor has vowed to show up, too, so watch out in case he's carrying a sack of confetti, his trademark sign of arrival ...

Dogging it

I'M not sure the following should be recommended for children, but monies raised from it goes to them, so it must be worthwhile. The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile pulls up Monday morning at Shriner's Hospital for Children , and onlookers are invited to pay so much per hot dog consumed on the spot by such hungry sportscasters as Ron Mizutani, Russell Yamanoha and Robert Kekaula. The idea is to see who can cut the mustard the best, become "Top Dog" and raise the most money for the hospital. My money's on Kekaula, who looks like he could put away the Wienermobile, but don't count out the well-fed Yamanoha either ...
