College players picked
to take on pros at UH

A dozen top college basketball players will take on the NBA stars of the U.S. Olympic men's team in a Sept. 2 exhibition game at Stan Sheriff Center on the University of Hawaii campus.

The 1 p.m. contest, to be televised by NBC, will complete a doubleheader that also pits the U.S. Olympic women's team, featuring WNBA standouts, against the Brazilian women's team at 10:30 a.m.

Named yesterday to the select team of men's collegians were Jason Richardson of NCAA champion Michigan State, Shane Battier and Jason Williams of Duke, Nick Collison of Kansas, Joe Forte of North Carolina, Cory Bradford of Illinois, Casey Jacobsen of Stanford, Ken Johnson of Ohio State, Terence Morris of Maryland, Troy Murphy of Notre Dame, Jamal Tinsley of Iowa State and Michael Wright of Arizona.

Mike Jarvis of St. John's will coach the team, assisted by Cincinnati's Bob Huggins.

The U.S. Olympians are led by Vince Carter of Toronto, Alonzo Mourning of Miami and Kevin Garnett of Minnesota, among other pro pillars. They will begin training Aug. 26 on Maui for next month's Sydney Olympic tournament.

Ticket prices for the Sept. 2 doubleheader are $35 and $18 for the general public and $13 for military personnel.

Tickets are available at the Stan Sheriff Center box office (8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday); Ward Center RainBowTique (10 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Saturday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday); UH Campus Center (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday), or by calling 944-BOWS (9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday).

Tickets also can be purchased at those locations for an Aug. 31 men's game (4 p.m.) between the U.S. and Canadian Olympic teams and a Sept. 3 women's exhibition (11 a.m.) between the U.S. Olympians and a U.S. college all-star team, both at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Warriors-Kauai at Kaiser

The Hawaiian Warriors semipro football team, unbeaten in two previous games this season, tackle the Kauai Cowboy All-Stars tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Kaiser High School Stadium.

Tickets are $5.

The Warriors, members of the North American Football League, defeated the Cowboy All-Stars, 14-0, on Kauai last month and earlier downed the USA All-Stars, 36-12.

Duke paddleboard race

The ninth annual Duke Kahanamoku World Championship Paddleboard Race from Hawaii Kai to Waikiki will be held Sunday, with proceeds to benefit the Honolulu Elks 616 children's outrigger canoe paddling program.

Tickets are available for $15 at the Elks Lodge, 2933 Kalakaua Avenue. Ticket holders will receive a poolside barbecue lunch, with live entertainment and door prizes.

Women's hoops on Maui

The Nov. 24 first-round games of the inaugural Women's Maui basketball tournament at the Lahaina Civic Center pit Illinois against Alcorn State at 9:30 a.m. and Tennessee vs. Clemson to follow.

The third-place and championship games are on Nov. 25 at 9:30 a.m. and noon.

The tourney, which follows the men's Maui Invitational, is sponsored by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and Chaminade University.

Mililani stops Chesapeake

Ianetta Lei went 3-for-4 with a double and a single to lead Mililani Prep to a 2-1 victory over the Chesapeake(Md.) Chargers in the first round of the 18-and-Under National Softball Tournament yesterday.

Lei's solo home run tied the game in the fifth inning, and her RBIdouble in the bottom of the seventh won it.

Mililani previously went 1-1 in two pool-play games at the tourney.

Aiea to World Series

Aiea defeated Yorba Hills, Calif., 3-1, yesterday in a Little League Junior Division tournament in Santa Rosa, Calif.

The victory lifted Aiea to the World Series in Taylor, Mich.

With the score tied 1-1, Aiea scored two runs in the top of the seventh for the winning margin.

Blake Lamug went the distance to earn the pitching win.
