After relinquishing its Kenwood Cup lead to defending champion New Zealand on Saturday, Australia sailed back into the top spot yesterday heading into today's final race in the 10-race series.

The 150-mile race to Maui and back starts at 6 p.m., and it will decide the championship.

Hawaii's Zamboni, one of two local entries, was involved in a collision in yesterday's ninth race off Waikiki and won't be able to compete in the finale.

Zamboni was on a starboard tack when Glama was close behind on a port tack. A strong gust of wind caught Glama's main sail, which was tight, launching her into a collision with Zamboni.

the start of Sunday's Kenwood Cup race No. 8.

Glama sustained a couple of scratches to her bow, but Zamboni incurred major midship hull damage.

Owner/skipper Doug Taylor was injured in the collision, receiving lacerations to the head and legs.

"Bad day. We had a pretty good start but a bad day overall," said Zamboni tactician Robbie Haines.

Both Zamboni and Glama are sailing for USAWhite.

With just one race remaining, each of team New Zealand's three boats must finish ahead of team Australia's three boats in order for New Zealand to retain its title.

The various class leaders are Esmeralda (A), Karasu (B), Samba Pa Ti (C), Smile (D), and Charade (E).
