Akaka Bill hearings set
for all islands, starting
August 28 on Kauai

Hawaiian rights bill given 50-50 chance

The first of six hearings on a bill to gain recognition of a political and trust relationship between Hawaiians and the federal government will be held Aug. 28 on Kauai.

The bill contains language that restates the Nov. 23, 1993, congressional resolution extending an apology by the United States to native Hawaiians for its role in the overthrow of the kingdom of Hawaii.

U.S. Sens. Daniel Akaka, who introduced the bill, and Daniel Inouye announced the following schedule for joint hearings of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and the House Committee on Resources:

Bullet Aug. 28 at Kauai Community College's Performing Arts Building in Lihue, 8:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and 1:15 to 4:45 p.m.

Bullet Aug. 29 at Kulana Oiwi Halau, 24 Maunaloa Hwy., Kalamaula, Molokai, 9:40 a.m.-1:40 p.m.

Bullet Aug. 29 at Hale Kupuna O Lanai Community Center, 1144 Ilima St., Lanai, 3:45-6:45 p.m.

Bullet Aug. 30 at Blaisdell Center's Pikake Room, 7:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1-4:30 p.m.

Bullet Aug. 31 at the University of Hawaii-Hilo's Campus Theater (auditorium), 200 W. Kawili St., 8:50 a.m.-12:20 p.m. and 1:20-4:50 p.m.,

Bullet Sept. 1 at Maui Community College's Student Lounge in Kahului, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-5:30 p.m.

Anyone wishing to testify orally should register Aug. 14-21. A full name, address and phone number will be required, and individuals must specify the island where their testimony will be given.

Oral testimony may be no more than five minutes in length.

Twenty copies of testimony to be delivered orally must be delivered to Inouye's office at the Prince Kuhio Federal Building, Room 7-212, Honolulu 96850, no later than Aug. 23.

Faxed testimony will not be accepted.

Written testimony may be of any length and will be included in the record of the hearings in full.

Committees request that five copies of written testimony be submitted. It should be mailed to the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, 838 Hart Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20510, or Inouye's Honolulu office, no later than Aug. 23.

Faxes will not be accepted.
