United Air

Most United delays
missing isles

A United Airlines nonstop flight from Chicago to Honolulu was running more than four hours late early today, as the airline scrambled to reposition aircraft after mainland storms.

Also playing a part in United flight delays and cancellations across the country was action by pilots who are calling in sick or refusing to work overtime to protest the lack of a new labor contract agreement.

The airline flew its full mainland-Hawaii schedule yesterday and expected to have the full number of flights today, said a company spokesman in Chicago, Joe Hopkins.

But some of those flights were delayed and explanations on the United Web site, www.ual.com, today ranged from "aircraft servicing" to "increased security measures" as well as "crew scheduling."

The longest Hawaii delay today was with Flight 43 from Chicago, a Boeing 747 that was scheduled to arrive in Honolulu 247 minutes late at 5:40 p.m. A Los Angeles-Maui flight was running two hours late and a San Francisco-Kona flight was 64 minutes late. However, most of United's 13 mainland-Hawaii flights scheduled for today were on time or close to it and there were no cancellations in the Hawaii service from the previously posted schedules.

Overall, the airline cancelled 187 of the 2,400 flights its nationwide system had scheduled for today. Aircraft and crews were dislocated yesterday by storms in the Chicago area.
