Plying the wood,
plying the sea

It was the start of the Plywood Cup. Each entrant was
given hand tools, plywood and two hours to build a boat
that two paddlers raced around a short course next to
Magic Island yesterday. The crews were mostly from
the Kenwood Cup competitors. Jen Roberts, left,
and Tina Ludlow celebrate winning the the event.
They are from Bubba Gump's Mai Tai Bar.
Proceeds will benefit Hawaii Cerebral Palsy.


Celebrating
cultural heritage

Kinokamau, 13, watches last night's Lantern Parade in
Hilo, as a float carrying a Japanese haari boat goes by.
The parade was part of the International Festival of the
Pacific, started 39 years ago to celebrate the isles'
varied ethnic cultures.

Spam Diego

Nelson Ishii of San Diego takes a final measure of the
Spam Musubi created in the parking lot of Qualcomm
Stadium before the Padres' game against the Chicago
Cubs yesterday. It was all part of Pacific Islander Day
at the game. Ishii, owner of Da Kine's restaurant in
San Diego, organized the event. The unofficial world's
largest musubi took 1,000 cans of Spam and 5, 000
sheets of seaweed to make. The Padres won, 11-9.
