Speedway winners

Cliff Songer won the Cruzer Bruzer main event in auto racing at Hawaii Motor Speedway Saturday.

Other winners were Clay Haumea in the super stock main event, Ikaika O'Brien in the modified main event, Bill Aamold in the midget main event, Shawn Ternora in the mini-stock series, Dino Botelho and Shelby Mize in the mother's in-law race, and Dean Freitas in the sprint car race.

Wrestlers at nationals

Four Hawaii wrestlers under the name of Team Hawaii competed at a national tournament in Fargo, N.D.

Travis Lee of St. Louis School went 8-2 in 10 Greco-Roman matches and placed fourth. He also finished sixth in freestyle.

Troy Takahashi of St. Louis, Jansen Fukuda of Mid-Pacific Institute and Noah Amba of Kamehameha Schools were the other Hawaii competitors.

Team Hawaii's coaches were John Robinson and John Kerley of Radford High School and Todd Los Banos of St. Louis.

Mililani goes for title

Richard Mariano struck out seven and gave up one hit over five innings as Mililani defeated Palmdale, Calif., 11-1, in the PONY Baseball West Zone Mustang (9-10) Tournament at Moreno Valley, Calif., yesterday.

Mililani, coming out of the loser's bracket, will have to defeat Pacific Grove twice today to advance to the World Series in Texas later this week.

Baseball team advances

The Hawaii Islanders finished 4-1 in pool play at the USABF 10-under World Series inSan Diego yesterday to earn the top seed heading into the quarterfinals.

Hawaii defeated the Jackie Robinson YMCA team from San Diego, 16-1. Hawaii will have a bye tomorrow and play again on Wednesday.

CABA team wins

Rick Miyamoto hit a three-run double in the bottom of the sixth to lift the Wai-Kahala Warriors to a 16-15 victory in the final pool play game at the Continental Amateur Baseball Association 11-under World Series in Tarkio, Mo.

Wai-Kahala (3-2) advances to championship bracket play beginning tomorrow.

Duke paddleboard race

The Elk's Lodge in Waikiki is sponsoring the Duke Kahanamoku World Championship Paddleboard Race on Aug. 13.

The race will be from Hawaii Kai to Waikiki, and it's a fundraiser for the Children's Canoe Team.

Spectators can buy a $15 ticket which will include a poolside barbecue lunch and live entertainment.
