Kamana‘o on
USA team

Kanoe Kamana'o, who will be a junior at Iolani in the fall, is a member of the USA Girl's Youth National Volleyball team.

The team opened play in the NORCECA (North America/ Central America/Caribbean) Zone Championship with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-21 victory over Mexico on Monday in the Dominican Republic.

Warriors headed Down Under

A Kamehameha Schools outrigger canoe paddling team will compete in the 2000 World Sprints at Townsville, Australia, next month.

Coaches Rose Lum and Kalama Heine head a contingent of 41 athletes who will compete Aug. 12-20.

Most of the paddlers will be in team events, but Krystal Tim Sing, Dariel Hoapili, Anella Borges, and Michelle Higashi have qualified for one-man 500-meter races.

"We'll be making it a cultural trip, too," Lum said. "We have a sister school in New Zealand which we will be visiting."

The team will also spend a couple days in Sydney.

Comings and goings

Punahou athletic director Tom Holden has received about 15 applications "from some pretty good people" for the Buffanblu varsity baseball coaching position vacated by Kala Ka'aihue earlier this month. A new coach will be named in late August, Holden said, and a new varsity boys' track and field coach will also be named next month to replace Dacre Bowen. Ka'aihue and Bowen both resigned after last season. ... HHSAA information director Thomas Yoshida, who also referees basketball games, just returned from an official's clinic in Jonesboro, Ark. Yoshida hopes to qualify to officiate Western Athletic Conference games. ... Kamehameha athletic director Blane Gaison said the Warriors are in the process of interviewing internal candidates for the boys' varsity basketball coaching job held by Jim Winchester .
