Northwestern on UH
football, hoop schedules

The University of Hawaii got a good jump on its non-conference football and basketball schedules for 2004.

A verbal agreement was reached with Northwestern University to play games in both sports here on Thanksgiving weekend of that year.

"It got done. It's good," UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida said. "It will take another month to take care of the paperwork, but it's done."

Northwestern associate athletic director Ken Kraft also said there are still a few details to iron out before a contract can be signed.

The Wildcats played the Rainbows at Aloha Stadium in 1998, winning 47-21.

Closer on the horizon, the Rainbows are still looking for a football opponent to replace Purdue, which last month backed out of a game scheduled for 2002.

Flanagan, Jackson win

John Flanagan and Jodi Jackson easily won their respective divisions at yesterday's Cholo's 2000 swim event at Waimea Bay.

Flanagan completed the 2,000-meter triangular race in 26 minutes, 22:2 seconds, over a minute ahead of Noa Sakamoto (27:47).

Jackson, finishing fourth overall in the field of some 300 swimmers, was timed in 28:36.2 for the women's title. Some three minutes behind was Kristin Simunovich (32:03).

This was the third event of the North Shore Swim Series. The fourth and final race is the Surf & Sea Cup on Aug. 3 at Haleiwa.

Pegasus first to finish

Pegasus, a 70-foot sloop from the Waikiki Yacht Club, was the first finisher in the 2,070-mile San Francisco to Kaneohe West Marine Pacific Cup on Saturday night.

Rage, the second to finish, arrived yesterday morning.

The next yachts are expected to arrive today.

Asahi Cup to Kaimiloa

David Nottage and his crew aboard Kaimiloa felt like they were reborn yesterday, battling back to retain their Asahi Super Cup PH-1 title after having to withdraw on Friday in the first race of the three-day competition.

Team Constellation, a charter gang of dentists on board Ho'onanea, won the PH-2 class.

Actuation captured the smaller J24 class.

Campbell stops Garcia

Australia's Mick Campbell beat Hawaii's Sunny Garcia in 2- to 3-foot waves yesterday to capture the Bluetorch Pro final at Huntington Beach, Calif.

With the second place finish, Garcia extended his Association of Surfing Professionals' ratings lead and moved closer to the elusive world title he's been chasing throughout his 14-year career.

"I'm bitter right now as I would have liked to have won," Garcia said. "Excuse me for being bitter, but I lost to a surfer that I feel is insignificant compared to me. I'm just disappointed to lose to Mick. I'm more upset because just prior to this event in an Australian magazine, Mick had said he thought all American surfers were pathetic. To say all Americans are pathetic is to say that I'm pathetic. I saw him at Pipe (Pipeline Masters) the other year and if you want to talk about pathetic..."

Kaneohe girl to camp

Thirty-two junior tennis players are invited to the camp for beginner-advanced beginner players. Garcia will represent the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section.

Vulcans on KHLO

University of Hawaii-Hilo athletic events will be broadcast on Emerald City Radio Partners-owned KHLO-AM (850) for the next three years.

The contract calls for KHLO to broadcast men's basketball and baseball, and women's volleyball and softball.
