Pegasus coming on strong

The Honolulu-based yacht Pegasus is poised to be the first arrival in the San Francisco to Kaneohe West Marine Pacific Cup.

Pegasus, out of Waikiki Yacht Club and Rage, of Portland, Ore. are on course for a showdown finish sometime tonight as the two approach the Kaneohe Bay finish line. As of yesterday, Pegasus was about 26 miles ahead of Rage, the record breaker in the 1996 race.

Lee wins Pua Melia

Mona Kim Lee shot a 2-under-par 71 yeterday to win the Pua Melia Women's Invitational at Olomana Links by eight strokes.

Lee finished with a two-day 145, followed by Sibylle Brinkman at 153. Yoshiko Koymama took low net honors in the championship flight with a 136.

Asahi Super Cup under way

Don Clothier's 45-foot Tower beat out two-time PH-1 Division champion Desperado in the opening race of the fourth annual Asahi Super Cup yacht racing series yesterday off Waikiki.

Actuation topped the J-24 fleet and Ho'onanea took PH-2 honors.

Abubo eliminated

Hawaii's Megan Abubo was eliminated in the third round of the Elleven Pro women's surf event in Huntington Beach, Calif. yesterday.

Abubo, the Association of Surfing Professionals women's ratings leader, finished behind Hawaii's Keala Kennelly and Australia's Pauline Menczer.

Despite scoring the highest wave of the day, Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard was eliminated from her third round heat due to an interference call.

In the men's Bluetorch Pro at Huntington Beach, ratings leader Sunny Garcia of Hawaii toppled Joca Junior of Brazil in his third- round heat.

Hawaii's Kalani Robb and Andy Irons won third-round heats. Hawaii's Shane Dorian, Ross Williams, Shawn Sutton and Conan Hayes were eliminated.

Movers lose to Oilers

The Peninsula Oilers beat the Hawaii Island Movers, 7-1, last night in an Alaska Baseball League game at Rainbow Stadium.

Scott Tajima had two of the Movers' four hits and drove in their only run. It was the Movers' fifth loss in a row to the Oilers.

Kailua doubles tomorrow

The Kailua Racquet Club's Men's Night Doubles opens its two-week run tomorrow with qualifying matches starting at 6 p.m.

The qualifying matches are nightly at 6 and 7:30 p.m. tomorrow through Friday. The main draw begins on July 30 and runs through the Aug. 5 title match.

Miyawaki at QB lunch

Dr. Edison H. Miyawaki, ownership partner of the Cincinnati Bengals and a supporter of Hawaii sports programs, will be one of the featured speakers at Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.

Dick Sutton, president of the Hawaii Association of USA Track & Field, and Michael Baker, president of Maryknoll School, also will speak. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Gymnastics camp off

The Hawaiian Island Twisters have cancelled a summer gymnastics camp for level-5 to elite-level gymnasts that was originally scheduled to begin Monday.
