Botelho is national honoree

Don Botelho was among 12 individuals awarded with citations by the National Federation of State High School Associations at its annual meeting last week in Minneapolis.

The Mid-Pacific athletic director and Pac-Five football coach was honored for his "extensive administrative experience at both the state and national levels."

Botelho has been a coach and athletic administrator in Hawaii for nearly 40 years.

Among his current posts is executive committee chair for the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association.

"He's universally respected through all the leagues, and as this award proves, throughout the nation," Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive director Keith Amemiya said. "He's well-respected because of his integrity and the fact that he is a strong voice of reason. He makes his decisions based on what is fair, even if it isn't always in the best interest of his school or league."

Select impresses in Vegas

Brandy Richardson is gone for now, having moved to Anaheim, Calif. The former Kalaheo star will play basketball her senior year at national power Brea Olinda in Orange County.

In her final fling under Mustangs coach Chico Furtado, Richardson led Hawaii Select to the semifinals of the U.S. Junior Nationals in Las Vegas last week.

Hawaii Select went 7-1 in the tournament after going 1-3 in the Oregon Trail tournament the week before.

Furtado said the improvement was due to strong outside shooting in support of Richardson. Hawaii Select averaged nearly seven 3-pointers per game.

"The key to us winning was perimeter help," Furtado said.

The hot shooting might help some local girls get college scholarships. Furtado said there were 200 coaches and scouts at the tournament.

"A lot of them came to see Brandy," Furtado said. "Then they see (Roosevelt's) Jodi Nakashima make five threes, and they ask about her. The Air Force coach is excited about (Iolani's) Monica Tokoro, and a lot of coaches were asking about (Castle's) Nicole Uperesa."

In addition to those mentioned above, Heather Gonsalves (Kalaheo), Rosemarie Kelly (Nanakuli), Heather Massey (Radford), Alyson Martin (Waiakea), Ashley Kualii (Waiakea), Caroline Ane (Punahou), Traci Torralva (McKinley), Lindsey Peck (Kalaheo) and Nicole Furtado (Kalaheo) played for Hawaii Select.

Many of those same players will be in action tonight in the semifinals of the Lady Mustang Summer League at Kalaheo.

Punahou plays Nanakuli at 5 and Castle meets Kalaheo at 6.

The third-place and championship games are tomorrow morning at 10 and 11.

Swish-erland

Kimberlee Morikawa scored nine points to lead the Kalakaua Basketball Foundation girls' team over host Switzerland, 41-17, yesterday in first-day pool play of the Nike Swiss International.

Castle senior-to-be Mari Kitagawa joins recent graduates Morikawa and Mayumi Stevens (Moanalua), Rae Self and Katannya Kapeli (Kamehameha), Kristi Hamada and Ashley Watamura (Mid-Pacific), Shayne Enright (Maryknoll), Darci Murakawa (Punahou), and Ipo Keopuhiwa (Nanakuli) on the first Hawaii girls' basketball team to play in Europe.

Kalakaua also sent a team to the Oregon Trail tournament. It included Aritta Lane and Kylee Nakamura (Aiea), Milia Macfarlane and Becky Hogue (Punahou), Jodi-Ann Segawa and Ashley Takata (Kalani), Shannon Riley (Maryknoll), Megan Fong (Roosevelt), Fabrianne Gin and Tricia Nishimoto (Iolani), Elizabeth Narkon (St. Francis) and Noelle Russell (Kamehameha).

League makes USA team

St. Louis senior-to-be Brandon League is one of 18 players from around the nation who will represent the United States Aug. 3-14 in the World Junior baseball championships in Edmonton, Canada. League survived a week-long tryout in Joplin, Mo. to make the USA Baseball Junior National Team.

Star-Bulletin all-state first-teamer Bronson Sardinha, who will be a senior at Kamehameha in the fall, was among the 41 trying out, but did not make the team.

The U.S. won the tournament last year, beating Chinese Taipei, 10-9 in the gold medal game.

Comings and goings

David Horswill (Kailua graduate) and Isaac Harbottle (St. Louis graduate) will play baseball at Los Angeles City College next year. ... Ed Allen, who coached Kamehameha's baseball team to three state championships during his tenure of 1980-89, is in town visiting this week from his home in Southern California. ... Former Pac-Five distance running standout Julian Tsukano (University High '99) is home preparing for his sophomore cross country and track seasons at United States International University in San Diego. Tsukano hopes to break 26 minutes in the 8-kilometer NAIA cross country distance this fall.
