Hilo girl is champ
at Junior World

SAN DIEGO -- Hilo's Kimberly Kim shot an 8-under-par 178 to win the Junior World Championship golf tournament in the 8-and-under division yesterday.

She finished one stroke ahead of Pornsawan Arjarayutt of Thailand after three rounds on the shortened, Par-54 Presidio Hills Golf Course.

Honolulu's Kaira Martin placed third in the same division with a 181.

Several Hawaii golfers placed high in the tournament, including Hilo's Kira-Ann Murashige (ages 13-14, tied for 4th), Honolulu's Stephanie Kono (ages 9-10, 3rd) and Michelle Wie (ages 9-10, 4th).

Golfers in the girls' and boys' 15-17 divisions will play a fourth and final round today.

Kim leads Pua Melia

Mona Kim, who won the Waialae Women's Invitational Tuesday, carded an opening-round 74 to take a one-stroke lead over Anna Umemura in the championship flight of the 24th annual Pua Melia Invitational golf tournament yesterday at Olomana Golf Course.

Heera Pak was at 77, third overall low gross, going into today's final round. Terri Lui, a 10-handicapper, was the championship flight low net leader with a 69.

Movers fall to Oilers

The Hawaii Island Movers lost to the Peninsula Oilers last night at Rainbow Stadium, 10-5.

The Oilers scored four times in the third inning and pounded out 15 hits.

Third baseman Duke Sardinha rapped a triple and single for the Movers, who finished with seven hits.

Ka earns volleyball honor

James Ka of Outrigger Canoe Club was named a junior All-American at the Junior Olympic boys volleyball championships at Reno, Nev., which finished Tuesday.

Ka, a recent graduate of Kamehameha Schools, will attend Pepperdine this year. He was on the OCC 18-under open team that was third in the silver division.

Rhonee Rojas, a recent University Lab School graduate who is headed for Penn State, was incorrectly listed as an All-American selection in yesterday's early edition of the Star-Bulletin.

Kern at senior nationals

Hawaii's Sean Kern is competing for the Newport (Calif.) Water Polo Foundation at the U.S. Men's Senior National Water Polo Tournament that began today (July 21) in Los Alamitos, Calif.

Kern, a member of the U.S. national team, is on leave from UCLA while he attempts to earn a berth on the U.S. Olympic team.

The 12-team event dates back to 1890.

Motor Speedway lineup

It will be "Muntada.Com Nite" at Hawaii Motor Speedway in Campbell Industrial Park tomorrow. Gates open at 5 p.m. and the action starts at 7. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for juniors 6-12 (with school ID). Keiki under 5 are admitted free.

Box Car Racing program

American Box Car Racing International will conduct a free summer youth program starting Monday and running through Aug. 18 at the Pearl City Box Car Track. The program, for boys and girls 9-to-15-plus years old, is sponsored by Tesoro Hawaii. Daily sessions are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Swim series continues

The Eyecatcher North Shore Swim Series continues Sunday with its third race, the Cholo's 2000 Swim at Waimea Bay.

The 2,000-meter event is a triangular race that begins at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $20, which includes a T-shirt and refreshments.

Polo resumes Sunday

The Hawaii Polo Club resumes its season Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. match at its Waimanalo Polo Grounds.

Gates open at 1 p.m. Admission is $3 per person; children ages 10-under are admitted free.
