Dave Vinton has accepted the position of sports director at KGMB-TV.

Vinton, acting sports director at the CBS affiliate since the departure of Neil Everett to ESPN last month, was a sports reporter at KGMB the past seven years.

Before that, he was an intern at KITV for two years.

"Dave has learned everything there is from the ground up and continues to have a great passion for sports," KGMB general manager Jim Lemon said. "At KGMB we want sports to be more than insiders' stuff. Recreational sports is very important to us, and Dave gets that, and is a champion of it."

Vinton moves to the Monday-to-Friday sports anchor spot. He said Ross Shimabuku has been offered the weekend anchor job. Liz Chun remains in the sports reporter spot.

"The way I look at it, I'm just taking over the playbook that Neil designed. We're still going to use the run-and-shoot, but just with a few new wrinkles," Vinton said. "I don't see a big departure, because I believe in what we're doing.

"There are some things we can do better, but we've carved out some niches of our own like 'Sports Challenge' and other interactive features."
