Pearlridge 4-Plex, a Consolidated movie theater at the Pearlridge Office Complex across the street from Pearlridge Center, will permanently close Sunday.

"It was fairly slow," said Alvin Lee, general manager for the 4-Plex and Pearlridge West, a larger Consolidated theater inside the mall.

Business at the 4-Plex began declining a few years ago, around the time Pearlridge West expanded to 16 theaters from 12.

Consolidated Theatres, the owner, decided to close the 4-Plex just last week, Lee said. The closing theater's 14 or so employees will transfer to Pearlridge West, he said. The 4-Plex opened around 1972, according to managers at Pearlridge Center.

Hawaii's theater business has boomed in recent years, with large multiscreen operations replacing smaller cinemas. The single-screen Cinerama on South King Street and the two-screen Koko Marina Twin Theatres closed last year.
