Kaio stops Takanohana,
Akebono solo at 7-0

NAGOYA, July 15 (Kyodo) - Sekiwake Kaio dumped grand champion Takanohana for a second loss Saturday while yokozuna Akebono had little trouble disposing of komusubi Tamakasuga to remain the sole unbeaten leader, at 7-0, in the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.

Ozeki Dejima, the defending champion in Nagoya, meanwhile, steamrollered second-ranked maegashira Takanowaka (1-6) at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium for his sixth win against one loss to join two rank-and-file maegashira a pace behind Akebono.

In the day's major upset, Kaio danced Takanohana around the ring as the crafty yokozuna refused to give the sekiwake control of his belt with his favored right hand.

Kaio, however, worked a nifty trick from left-hand control, pulling Takanohana backward over his left knee and dropping him onto his backside on the dohyo's surface for his fifth win.

Akebono, who appeared shaky while winning the previous day, stormed out of his crouch Saturday and made short work of winless Tamakasuga for his seventh straight win.

Meanwhile, yokozuna Musashimaru improved to 5-2 as he backed out stubborn third-ranked maegashira Tochinonada (1-6).

Chiyotaikai(5-2) made life difficult for fellow ozeki Musoyama, who needs eight wins to retain his rank after missing the entire summer tourney, dragging him to the dirt after a series of slaps for a fourth loss.

Maegashira No. 2 Toki (2-5) picked up only his second win of the tournament pulling down newly-promoted ozeki Miyabiyama (3-4) to a second successive loss.

Komusubi Tosanoumi's joy after defeating Miyabiyama to go 2-4 on Friday was short-lived as Tochiazuma easily shoved him out to improve for the sekiwake's fifth win.

American No.13 maegashira Sentoryu, or Henry Armstrong Miller, continued his impressive debut in the makuuchi division slapping down Mongolia's seventh-ranked Kyokutenho within seconds of the face-off, leaving both wrestlers 5-2.

Kyokutenho's compatriot Kyokushuzan, however, slipped to 1-6 after 12th-ranked maegashira Shikishima (2-5) forced him out of the ring with an elbow clamp in the preceding bout.

Akebono undefeated
at 7-0 solo, Takanohana
suffers second loss

NAGOYA, Japan (AP) - Hawaii-born yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono used his trademark hand thrusts to stay undefeated, alone in the lead with a 7-0 perfect record Saturday, the seventh day of the 15-day Nagoya Grand Sumo tournament.

One victory behind at 6-1 were ozeki (champion) Dejima and two lower-ranked wrestlers, Chiyotenzan and Takamisakari.

Two other yokozunas - Musashimaru and Takanohana - were another victory behind to share a 5-2 record with seven other wrestlers.

Akebono, or Chad Rowan, gave a series of fierce hand thrusts at the neck of No. 4 maegashira (senior wrestler) Tamakasuga, driving him out of the ring. Tamakasuga is winless at 0-7.

Musashimaru, born Fiamalu Penitani of Hawaii, survived a series of persistent ringside pushes by top-ranked maegashira Tochinonada (1-6) but bulldozed him out in the end.

Takanohana suffered his second defeat.

Komusubi (junior champion second class) Kaio resisted Takanohana's push at the ringside and threw down the yokozuna after slapping his chest, forcing him to lose balance.

Chiyotenzan, who is No. 6-ranked maegashira, threw down No. 5 maegashira Kaiho (3-4).

No. 11-ranked maegashira Takamisakari threw down No. 12-ranked Otsukasa (4-2).

No. 8 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, was tightly gripped by the loin belt and bulldozed out by No. 10 maegashira Shikishima (2-5). Kyokushuzan fell to 1-6.

No. 13 maegashira Sentoryu, or American Henry Armstrong Miller from St. Louis, Missouri, quickly sidestepped and slapped No. 7-maegashira Kyokutenho's back, sending him to the ground. Both Sentoryu and Kyokutenho, or Tsevengnyam Nyamjav from Mongolia, were 5-2.

In the 26-member juryo division, No. 8-ranked Hoshitango, or Argentine Imach Marcelo Salomon, was driven out by No. 13-ranked Kotoiwakuni (3-4) and was winless at 0-7.

In makushita, the top junior division, No. 12-ranked Wakaazuma (1-2), or Yoshinobu Kuroda from Brazil, was shoved out by No. 10-ranked Ogura. No. 42-ranked Kyokutenzan (1-3), or Mongolian Enkhbat Batmunkha, was also pushed out by No. 44-ranked Hisatsuryu.

In sandanme, the second-highest junior division, No.3-ranked Kasugaoh (3-1), or Kim Son-tek from South Korea, slammed down equal-ranked Tsurunomori. No. 99-ranked Azumaoh (3-1), or Brazilian Yasuto Morita, threw down No. 100-ranked Wakasuruga.

In the third-highest junior division of jonidan, No. 80-ranked Ryukizan (1-3), or South Korean Kim Soo-young, was driven out by No. 83-ranked Shotsukasa. No. 134-ranked Ryuo, or Mongolian Erkhem Ochirsanchirbold, was slapped down to the ground by No. 130-ranked Yahataumi (3-1).

Wrestlers in junior divisions have only seven bouts during the 15-day tournament.
