KGMB’s Mihara works
in Japan as announcer

Question: What ever happened to Ross Mihara, the guy who used to anchor the sports at KGMB about 10 years ago? Last I heard, he was working in Japan.

Answer: Mihara can be heard in Hawaii doing the live play-by-play for sumo on cable channel NGN shown every other month. Since September 1994, he has been doing TV and radio news announcing in English for NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corp.) in Tokyo.

As a free-lance announcer, the 36-year-old said he has had some "interesting outside gigs." He was the arena announcer for the speed skating at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, and has done the voice-over for commercials and videos for large businesses, including Disney.

The former sportscaster worked at KGMB from 1989 to 1994, moving up from sports producer to director. He was fired when a new news director arrived, which he says was the best thing that could have happened to him.

"I just wish I had studied harder during Japanese class when I was at Iolani School 20 years ago."
