Solicitor for Alyshia may be part of scam

The police are warning the public that a woman going door to door and soliciting contributions for Alyshia Shimizu may be part of a scam.

A Pearl City resident reported to police that a woman knocked on her door Sunday asking for a donation for Alyshia, who is recovering from necrotizing fasciitis, commonly known as a "flesh-eating" infection.

The Shimizu family is unaware of anyone soliciting contributions on their behalf in this manner.

Donations to Alyshia Shimizu may be made at any First Hawaiian Bank branch or the Honolulu Police Federal Credit Union at 1537 Young St., 3rd Floor, Honolulu 96826.

Hawaiian group sues to stop runway work

WAILUKU -- A native Hawaiian group has filed a lawsuit to halt a $4.2 million construction project at Kahului Airport.

Hui Alanui O Makena alleges that the state is trying to strengthen the 7,000-foot runway and turn it into an international airport.

Dana Hall, a Hui Alanui spokeswoman, said the group plans to seek a temporary restraining order or preliminary injunction.

No date has been set for a hearing.

In a Maui Circuit Court complaint filed Friday, the group contends that the state should seek a special management area permit for the work.

Gov. Ben Cayetano said the runway needs to be repaired and that he has received assurances from Maui County planners that no special management area permit is required for the work.
