Stage set for Po‘okelas
with DHT up for
32 nominations

Diamond Head Theatre collected the greatest number of nominations for the 17th annual Po'okela Awards.
DHT is up for 32 awards, followed by Manoa Valley Theatre, with 22 nominations. And tiny Hawaii Pacific University Theatre, which offered only three productions -- "Little Foxes," "Tintypes" and the "Importance of Being Earnest" -- during its season, is up for 14 awards.
Productions garnering the most nominations were MVT's "Angels in America: Perestroika," a drama about AIDS, with nine nominations, and HPU's "The Importance of Being Earnest," with six nominations. Both are also in the running for Best Overall Play, competing against The Actors Group's "Buried Child," Diamond Head Theatre's "Jackie: An American Life" and MVT's "Of Mice and Men."
Up for Best Musical are Army Community Theatre's "Big River," DHT's "Cinderella" and "Phantom," HPU's "Tintypes" and MVT's "Forever Plaid."
The annual ceremony sponsored by the Hawaii State Theatre Council, will take place at 6 p.m. July 24 at Koolau Country Club. The cost to attend is $30 for members and $40 for nonmembers. Reservations must be made by July 17. Call Linda Hearn at 623-2973.
