Masaki students shine

Maile Cha, a 9-year-old pianist studying with Ellen Masaki, won the chance to conduct the Honolulu Symphony in Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Cha solicited the most pledges for Sunday's Pianothon, which raised $17,000 for the symphony and Kauai's Prince Albert Music Festival.

Students of the Ellen Masaki School of Music performed at the Sheraton Waikiki. A dinner honoring Masaki followed the fund raiser.

Former Masaki student Nalani Blaisdell and her husband, KHON-TV's Bill Brennan, hosted the event. Highlights included performances by Norman Krieger, director of the Prince Albert festival; and Lisa Nakamichi, a former Masaki pupil and winner of international honors.
