lead in Billabong win

JEFFREY'S BAY, South Africa -- Hawaii's Megan Abubo yesterday extended her Association of Surfing Professionals ratings lead by 380-points when she claimed her second World Championship Tour victory of the year.

Abubo overcame bumpy conditions with solid maneuvers and defeated the 1998 Billabong MSF Pro champion Trudy Todd of Australia.

"It was really hard to surf out there," said Abubo. "There were a lot of bumps and we were surfing right over the rocks, too, so there were a lot of difficulties."

Ex-Rainbow Cherry
granted a new trail

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Raphel Cherry, a former NFL player with Washington and Detroit, has been granted a new trial nearly a year after being convicted of first-degree murder.

The Arkansas Supreme Court upheld yesterday a lower court ruling that jurors for the original trial apparently violated instructions against talking about the case.

Cherry, 37, was sentenced last August to life in prison for the December 1998 killing of his estranged wife, Jerri.

A fifth-round pick by the Redskins out of the University of Hawaii in 1985, he appeared in 42 games with Washington and Detroit and had five interceptions between 1985-88.
