Yacht record expected

Thanks to winds of 12-22 knots, Grand Illusion was expected to arrive in Lahaina tomorrow morning with a record-breaking finish in the Victoria-to-Maui yacht race.

Grand Illusion logged some 348 miles yesterday, staying about 100 miles ahead of Class A rival Renegade. Renegade was expected in Lahaina tomorrow evening.

The Class B division continued to be close, with some 11 miles separating Joia, Farr-Ari and Pursuit as of yesterday's roll call. Night Runner was the Class C leader and second overall while Oriole leads Class D.

The yachts started the 2,308-nautical mile race in Victoria, B.C. on June 27.

Garcia advances

Competing in glassy, three-foot waves at Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa, Hawaii's Sunny Garcia survived a strong challenge from wildcard Sean Holmes to progress to round four of the Billabong MSF Pro surf meet.

Garcia will next take on Brazilian Peterson Rosa.

In other heats yesterday, Sunset Beach's Ross Williams lost in a tightly fought match to Brazil's Flavio Padaratz, and Kauai's Andy Irons was eliminated by reigning world champion Mark Occhilupo of Australia.

The clash between Hawaii's Shane Dorian and Kalani Robb was postponed until today due to darkness.

Maui golfers qualify

Shayna Miyajima and Kevin Shimomura were the top medalists as 19 Maui junior golfers qualified yesterday at the Waiehu Golf Course for next week's Hawaii State Junior Championship.

Miyajima shot 76 and Shimomura 77 in the girls' and boys' 15-18 age groups.

Bulls win in Holland

The Bulls U-15 Red boys' soccer team beat a team from Spain on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie in regulation last Sunday in the championship game of the Euro Youth Cup 2000 in Holland.

The Bulls advanced to the final by beating teams from Slovenia (1-0), Holland (4-0) and Belgium (4-0). They also tied a team from Indiana (0-0).

Miners beat Movers twice

The Mat-Su Miners defeated the Hawaii Island Movers in two one-run baseball games yesterday in Palmer, Alaska.

The Miners won the opener, 4-3, and followed up with a 5-4 victory.

Chris Catanzaro led all Movers batters in the doubleheader, going 5-for-8 with three RBIs, a double and a stolen base.

Bryce Uegawachi went 2-for-4 for Hawaii in the first game.

Softball title to Mililani

The Mililani Prep softball team captured its third State ASA 18-Under Junior Olympic Softball Tournament in four years last weekend at Ala Wai Field.

Mililani finished as the only undefeated team in the tournament, going 6-0, and outscoring opponents, 55-6.

Pitchers Mitzi Ing and Ianetta Lei, who helped Iolani to the recent state title, both won three games.

Mililani (27-1) advances to the National 18-Under Junior Olympics in Normal, Illinois, Aug. 8-13.
