JEFFREY'S BAY, South Africa -- Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Megan Abubo won first-round matches in the Billabong MSF Pro women's surf contest yesterday.

Keala Kennelly, also of Hawaii, suffered a surprise defeat, losing to Australia's Neridah Falconer.

Having come to South Africa rated third on the Association of Professionals World Championship Tour after her victory in Tahiti last month, Kennelly will have a chance to redeem herself in round two today.
