LIHUE - Kauai police have identified the man found shot to death in his Wainiha home Monday night as Jeffrey Brisebois, 48, a long-time resident.

Brisebois lived alone on Powerhouse Road in an isolated mountainous area where most homes, including his, are hidden from view by passing motorists. Brisebois was involved in litigation with numerous other property owners on the north shore.

Lt. Bill Ching, chief of detectives, said as of this morning he hasn't ruled out the possibility of a suicide although police are investigating the death as a murder.

An autopsy was scheduled for today. "That should answer a lot of questions," Ching said.

If determined to be a homicide, Brisebois' death would be the third murder on Kauai, population 56,000, this year.

The body of Kauai resident Lisa Bissell, 38, was discovered in a cane field ditch near Polihale Beach Park April 7.

Miu Lan Esposo-Aguiar, 39, died March 31 of severe burns received after her husband allegedly doused her with a flammable liquid and set her on fire March 13. Gregory M. Aguiar, 49, is charged with second-degree murder.

Prior to Esposo-Aquiar, the most recent murder on Kauai occurred in the summer of 1997.
