NEW YORK -- With five home runs from hitters in the Nos. 7, 8, 9 and 1 spots, the New York Mets overwhelmed the Florida Marlins, 10-5, last night.

Major League logoBenny Agbayani, from Hawaii, had two homers, and Jay Payton, Melvin Mora and pinch-hitter Mark Johnson also cleared the fences.

The Mets, leading 6-3, blew the game open with four runs in the seventh, when Payton, Agbayani and Mora homered.

With their fifth straight victory, the Mets (42-31) moved within three games of first-place Atlanta in the National League East. The Braves will visit Shea Stadium for four games this weekend.

Agbayani also homered in the third inning when he crushed a breaking ball into the left-field bullpen to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.
