McCrearys head home

THOSE people who've been waiting for John and Betsy McCreary to return home from New York, where John's been director of choirs at St. James Church, be advised he returns next week. He has one last concert, a recital at Mercersberg Academy Tuesday, before heading back. Betsy was especially pleased at the reaction from members of St. James, who told her the music was never Mug shotbetter than during John's "retirement" year there. It was especially nice, reports Betsy, "when you're 70 and in New York City." Then there's her mother, who at age 90 was the cover girl on the May issue of PT Magazine, and honored as physical therapist of the century last week. Considering she was working a good deal of that century, it's hardly surprising ...

THE item here on former Isle dancer Martha Carrell appearing with Jimmy Borges at the Kahala Hilton Saturday night has prompted an email from former Isle photog Stan Rivera. He used to see Martha occasionally when she worked at the L.A. PBS station after leaving Hawaii, but knew her when she was dancing at the Queen's Surf luau with his former wife, Bernie Jay, as well as Sweetie Moffatt, Rosie Alvaro and Becky Pang. Rivera is now chef at a restaurant in Sherman Oaks, Calif., and was in Hawaii recently staying at the Halekulani where his youngest son, Keith, is an assistant manager. Yet another ex-pat online Star-Bulletin reader ...

Spoonerism

SPOONERISMS are unintentionally transposed sounds, such as "Oh, holy cow" for "okolehao." Spooners, on the other hand, are stylish aloha shirts made by Reyn's. Featured on this year's annual limited issue Fourth of July Reyn's Spooner aloha shirt is the face of Uncle Sam. It's on display at Reyn's, but isn't for sale until July 4 on this, the third of the dated collector's shirt series ...

TAKING off yesterday for Vietnam was Bob Jones, grateful that his past two trips there went better than the first four when he was a war correspondent. Jones now takes groups on off-the-beaten path trips, and his latest group of 30 locals and one Alaskan is joining Jones on a three-week bus journey through North and South Vietnam, the Central Highlands and Laos ...

DON'T talk about the drought here with David Booth or Ric Schneider. The two organized last week's Nuuanu Nights and it rained all evening downtown, limiting crowds to but a fraction of what they usually are and costing the two dearly. It was, says Schneider, like watching money flowing down the gutters of the street into the sewer ... Former Miss Hawaii Donna Hartley is heading this way again in October. She now gives seminars and has written a book she'll be promoting ...

Winston/Churchill

HARD to believe, but the publicist for piano soloist George Winston is named Ben Churchill. The latter informs us that Winston will be perform a series of three solo piano concerts next month on three islands, featuring selections from his new CD, "Plains." He'll be performing July 5 at the Kauai Performing Arts Center, July 8 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and July 9 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu. There are 16 tracks on the new CD, including two Hawaiian songs arranged for piano, "No Ke Ano Ahiahi" and "Queen's Jubilee," written by Queen Lili'uokalani, one of his favorite composers. And Winston always performs a couple of slack key guitar pieces at his concerts ...
