Movie classics liven
up reading series

Two classic movies -- "One Million B.C." and "Abbott & Costello Meet the Mummy," --will be featured Thursday when the Kailua Public Library hosts a vintage film program, "Dig into Dinosaur Movies."

"One Million B.C.," directed by Hal Roach, stars Victor Mature, Carole Landis and Lon Chaney Jr. The comedy duo of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello star in the second film.

The free program presented by Steven Fredrick, a film historian and collector of rare movies, will begin at 6:45 p.m. under the library's Reading Tree.

The films are being shown in conjunction with the library's Children's Summer Reading Program for keiki who will be in preschool through grade 6 in the fall.

The program begins today and continues through July 22. This year's theme, "Dig Into Books," focuses on dinosaurs, archaeology and gardening.

The list for the younger keiki includes Paul Strickland's learn-to-count book "Ten Terrible Dinosaurs," "Happy Birthday, Danny and the Dinosaur!" by Syd Hoff and "Buster's Dino Dilemma" by Marc Tolon Brown, about a third-grade class hunt for fossils.

Kids in grades 4 to 6 can choose from works such as Edward Packard's "Dinosaur Island," Don Lessem's "Raptors!: The Nastiest Dinosaurs," and Jeanne Bendick's "Tombs of the Ancient Americas."

For each book read, kids will receive one free incentive while supplies last, and be entered in a weekly drawing for two movie passes and Border's gift certificates.

A grand-prize drawing will take place July 19 for three Pearlridge shopping sprees valued at $250, $500 and $1,000.

The Kailua Public Library is at 239 Kuulei Road. For information, call 266-9911.

Call your neighborhood library for other summer reading programs.
