Ex-comatose man aims to jump back in water

Felix Dueno of Hauula was comatose for nearly two days after being struck in the back of the head in a June 6 surfing accident in Waikiki.

But Dueno, 45, has been released from Queen's Hospital and is recuperating at home.

"The doctor told him you are here because of God," JoAnn Chisholm said of her boyfriend's recovery. "While he was in a coma, the doctors did not expect him to make it.

"Then miraculously, he just woke up (June 8)."

Dueno's family had issued a public plea for information on what happened to Dueno, so they could determine his further treatment.

Anthony Haag and an unknown visitor, who was paddling a kayak, pulled Dueno from the water last week, says Chisholm.

"He had swallowed so much water and sand," Chisholm said. "The doctors said he had been without oxygen for 10 minutes. There felt no pulse when they took him out of the water."

Dueno says he's tired but happy to be alive and thankful for the prayers and support of friends.

"I used to be a gymnast and was taught to get up and do it again when you fall, so my first thought is to jump back in the water as soon as I can," he said.

Help needed at ancient Hawaiian fishpond

The public is invited to join continuing efforts to revitalize an 11-acre ancient Hawaiian fishpond in Kaneohe next Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Waikalua Loko Fishpond Preservation Society will hold a community workday to clear mangrove and rubbish as well as conduct an educational tour of the pond.

The Waikalua Loko Fishpond, "unique in terms of human engineering, is a beautiful site, but requires constant maintenance," said Herb Lee Jr., president of the society.

Students and community residents learn about ancient and modern Hawaiian fishpond practices, as well as biology and oceanography, using a hands-on approach at the fishpond.

To get to the fishpond, head toward Kailua on Kaneohe Bay Drive; turn left on Puahala Rd. Turn right on Kulauli St.; follow into the golf course. Follow public access signs to the beach.
