HILO -- Convicted sex offender Habib Shabazz has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for violation of probation for a 1995 burglary.

The case of Shabazz, 23, caused a stir last month when Oahu Circuit Judge Sandra Simms sentenced him to a year in prison, which he had already served awaiting trial for sexual assault, and released him.

Shabazz had said the sex with the 17-year old victim was consensual.

But the 1998 assault on the girl occurred while Shabazz was on probation for a burglary on the Big Island.

Hilo Circuit Judge Riki May Amano this week said such an offense while a person is on probation is "a judge's worst nightmare," then resentenced Shabazz to a maximum of 10 years.
