Free bone-marrow donor
registration Saturday

The Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry will conduct free bone-marrow donor registration and testing 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Blaisdell Park in Pearl City.

The registry matches registered marrow donors with Hawaii residents who need bone-marrow transplants due to terminal blood diseases, such as leukemia.

More than 16,000 people nationwide are diagnosed with some type of fatal blood disease each year.

The registry is seeking to register as many potential donors as possible, especially those of Asian and Pacific Islander ancestry.

Donors must be between 18 and 60 and in general good health. A small sample of blood is collected from potential donors for tissue typing.

The drive is sponsored by Cosmopolitan Consistory No. 291, a community organization of military and non-military men.

For information, call 547-6154.
