Hawaii will join the nation in celebrating Gay Pride 2000 with a parade and festival June 24.

An estimated 400 to 500 people will march in the parade from Ala Moana Park down Kalakaua Avenue to Kapiolani Park from 10 a.m. to noon.

The festival will follow the parade at McCoy Pavilion from noon to 9 p.m.

This year's theme, "Proud to Serve," will celebrate and give thanks to the volunteers who help the gay community grow stronger and more "out."

Jack Law and Tracey Bennett will serve as grand marshals for the parade.

Law is the commissioner of the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission since 1994, one of the original board members of Life Foundation and owner of Hula's Bar & Lei Stand.

Bennett has educated those inside and outside the gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual community on various aspects of the community.

She has also lobbied for Marriage Project Hawaii and spearheaded a letter-writing campaign for Protect Our Constitution Campaign.
