Kalihi transformer fire doused without injury

A transformer fire today that spread into the brush on the slopes above public housing projects on Kamehameha IV Road in Kalihi Valley caused no property damage or injuries.

The fire, reported shortly after midnight, was extinguished at 5:10 a.m.

Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said seven engine and three ladder companies as well as the Hazardous Materials Unit were involved in fighting the fire.

Firefighters from the Kalihi Uka station reported hearing an explosion shortly after midnight.

The transformer fire spread into the brush above Kilohi Place, but wind conditions pushed the fire away from mountainside homes, Soo said.

Home safety session put on by Hui Hoaloha

A speaker from HMSA will help people identify hazardous areas during a discussion on "How Safe is Your Home?" at Nuuanu Congregational Church's Kosasa Hall at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

HMSA's Cee Jemino also will share fire and safety tips.

The session, sponsored by Hui Hoaloha, is free.

Maui house fire causes $150,000 damage

KULA, Maui -- A fire in Kula caused $150,000 damage to a house and its contents Saturday night, leaving two adults and three children homeless.

No one was home at the time.

Fire crews had the blaze at 125-A Akea Place under control in 17 minutes.

The cause is still under investigation.

Straub offers program on kids' health, fitness

Activities to encourage health and wellness will be offered this summer to children ages 7 through 12 by Straub Clinic & Hospital's Health Education Department.

"Fitastic Kids" will be held 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

It is offered in four two-week sessions: June 13-23, June 26-July 7, July 17-28 and July 31-August 11.

The cost is $350 per session, with a discount to families enrolling more than one child.

Motor and sport skill development, movement awareness, team games and general health education will be emphasized.

Big Island man dies after being hit, run over

HILO -- A 55-year-old Puna man died at Hilo Hospital early yesterday morning after he was struck by a vehicle while walking on Volcano Highway near Mamaki Street in Hilo.

His name is being withheld until family members are notified.

Responding to a 10:58 p.m. call Saturday, police officers determined he was walking along the mauka shoulder of the road when he was struck by a 1996 Dodge flatbed truck driven by Han Bang, 49, of Pahoa, Puna. The victim was knocked onto the roadway and run over by passing vehicles.

Drugs seized in raid at home in Lanikai

Police and state narcotics officers arrested a 47-year-old man and seized cocaine, crystal methamphetamine and marijuana in a drug raid today at his Lanikai residence at 137-B Kaiolena Dr.

The search warrant was executed at 6 a.m. Police Narcotics/Vice Division Sgt. John Shaw said the raid stems from complaints from area residents.

"There's always people coming down our driveway at all hours, from young kids to adults," said neighbor Susan Cummings. "It leads you to believe there was illegal activity going on there."

Woman tourist dragged, but hangs on to purse

A 37-year-old visitor from Taiwan suffered minor injuries today as she was dragged by a man who snatched her purse in Waikiki.

The woman was eating at a Koa Avenue noodle shop at 12:31 a.m. when the man grabbed her bag, which was strapped diagonally across her body, police said.

She was dragged by the fleeing suspect, who eventually let go of the purse and fled in a vehicle .

Navy deserter, wife held in robbery, kidnapping

Navy deserter Christopher Choate and his wife, Junko "Tia" Faumuina, have been charged by police with robbing and kidnapping an elderly woman on May 28.

He was arrested Thursday near Aloha Stadium . She was taken into custody two days earlier.

Choate is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail while bail for Faumuina is set at $50,000.

Safe reported stolen from Leeward Petroleum

Police are investigating the theft of a safe from the office of Leeward Petroleum, Inc. at 85-723 Farrington Highway in Waianae.

The burglary was reported today at 4:36 a.m.

Attempted carjacking suspect is arrested

One of three suspects involved in an attempted carjacking today at Sand Island Access Road and Nimitz Highway was arrested shortly after the incident was reported at a Kalihi housing complex at Io Lane.

A military man called police at about 5:30 a.m. after wrestling with three men he said tried to steal his sports utility vehicle.

One of them reportedly was armed with a handgun.

A second witness provided police with the license number of the car used by the suspects to flee the scene.

Electrical fire on Kauai started by fish tank

LIHUE -- A fish tank caused an electrical fire in a Kauai ophthalmologist's office at 8:37 a.m. yesterday, the fire department said.

Fire officials estimate about $100,000 in damage to the Kukui Grove Shopping Center offices.

Fire near Waikane Valley shuts road for 2 hours

A fire at 3:35 a.m. today at 48-322 Kamehameha Highway, near Waikane Valley, caused $4,000 damage to a home whose residents were recently evicted. The fire caused closure of Kamehameha Highway for two hours.

Fire Capt. Richard Soo said the cause is "suspicious.
