Grants and Donations

Bullet Elizabeth Kent, director of the Hawaii State Judiciary's Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution, is the recipient of the Hawaii Women's Legal Foundation's Rhoda Lewis Award for Public Service and a $500 grant.

Bullet The Kiwanis Clubs of Pearl Harbor, Kaneohe and East Hawaii, and past club Lt. Govs. Brian Klaschka and Richard M.C. Lum, raised/contributed $1000 for a relief fund for victims of the Taiwan earthquake disaster.

Bullet As part of the Coast Guard's "Partnership in Education Program," the Coast Guard Electronic Support Unit donated 11 refurbished Pentium computers to Kalihi-Waena Elementary School.

Bullet William D. Siegel contributed $5000 to YMCA's Communities in Schools-Hawaii program.

Bullet The Mental Health Association in Hawaii received donations and grants from the following agencies: Hawaii Community Foundation's Gwenfread Allen Fund ($4,000) for advanced psychiatric directives activities; Gannett Foundation ($3,000); Eli Lilly & Co. ($2,500) for public education; Interline Hui O Hawaii Club ($300); and Parke-Davis ($200) for a mental health consumer roundtable meeting.

Bullet GTE Hawaiian Tel, as part of its national Growth Initiatives for Teacher program, awarded $15,000 to Maui's Samuel Enoka Kalama Intermediate School teachers Gail Reinhardt and Diane Banks for their proposed "The Ring of Fire Project." The project will teach students about the relationship between the ocean and landmasses, and explore the causes of tsunamis and earthquakes.

On the job ...

Bullet Hawaii Pacific University named Dee Okahara its assistant director of Graduate Admissions and Marketing. Okahara was an assistant vice president at Aloha United Way where she helped in the planning and executing of fund-raising campaigns and presentations and the recruiting and training of volunteers.

Bullet Cades Schutte Fleming & Wright welcomes back former partner Thomas P. Huber to the firm as Of Counsel, and welcomes associates Duke T. Fujiyama, Taya R. Naruse and Kaiulani E.S. Kidani to its litigation department. Huber recently retired from First Hawaiian Bank as executive vice president and general counsel. Fujiyama received his law degree from the Columbia University School of Law and formerly worked as a foreign legal associate for Nagashima & Ohno in Tokyo. Naruse received her law degree, cum laude, from the Willamette University College of Law and Kidani received her degree, cum laude, from the William S. Richardson School of Law.

Scholastic Honors

Bullet Marques H. Marzan, fiber artist and undergraduate student at the UH-Manoa Fiber Art program, received the $500 Elsa Takesue Memorial Scholarship from Fibers Hui of Hawaii.

Bullet The Kiwanis California-Nevada-Hawaii District awarded the Kenneth C. Forror Scholarships to: Leslie Au, Pearl City Key Club treasurer; Jean Chow, Division 22 Key Club lieutenant governor and Aiea Key Club member; Kathy Pak, Pearl City Key Club president; and Karen Vea, Farrington Key Club president. Chow was also selected as one of the Top 10 Distinguished Lt. Governors for the district.

Bullet La Pietra inducted Anne Cwynar, Aya Inamura and Samantha Perske, 12th graders; Sara Amos, Marisa Daengpiea, Erika Hayden, Nicole Howe, Arielle Jessel and Ivy Ogawa, 11th graders; and Portland Know, 10th grader, into its Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Bullet The following students/teachers from Farrington and Olomana high schools were selected to participate in the Close Up Foundation government studies program in Washington D.C. From Farrington: Sophia Afoa, Emmanuel Aquino, Maribel Cabaya, Cherry Cambe, Mason Dimond, Rita Filisi, Keenan Keohohou, Nelson Kikuch, Ihanhanna Nguyen, Aaron Ramirez, Bryan Salvatierre, Ilaria Skimpy, Sarah Tajon, Katalina Tongotea and Michelle Zuniga. Bullet Winners of Hawaii Pacific University's 12th Annual Hawaii High School Writing Award Competition are: Mishalla Joy Mei-Lan Spearing from Radford High School for her essay "Poetry in Motion," first; Tatjana Anne Johnson also from Radford High School for her essay "From Head to Knee?" and Dawoon Kang from Sacred Hearts Academy for her essay "The Xerox Massacre Impacts Hawaii and its People."

Bullet Recipients of Hawaii Pacific University's Robert E. Black Awards for Excellence are Jason Kim, a junior with a double major in entrepreneurship and international business; and Marianne Molland, who is pursuing a master of science in Information Systems and a master of arts in Organizational Change.

Bullet Marisa Foo Wahl, a student at Iolani High School, was chosen to participate in the debut of the Presidential Classroom's Media and Democracy Program.
