Pali Highway traffic
light project to
cost $573,187

Question: What ever happened to the traffic light planned for the intersection of Pali Highway and Jack Lane?

Answer: The state Department of Transportation has awarded a $573,187 contract to Mega Construction to install a traffic signal at Pali Highway and Jack Lane. The contract also calls for traffic-monitoring cameras, signs and pavement markings, reconstruction of curb ramps, a catch basin and auxiliary traffic lanes.

Work, originally scheduled to begin in August, will now start at the end of June. The project is expected to take 60 to 90 days to complete.

Since 1994, five pedestrians have been killed and more than 200 injured along a 1.3-mile stretch of Pali Highway. The Pali Highway/Jack Lane intersection is one of the state's most dangerous.

In March, flashing amber lights were installed in the road to illuminate the crosswalk at that intersection. The lights, which can be seen for 2,000 feet and are activated by a push button, will be removed when the new traffic signal is installed.
