An estimated 250,000 Americans die annually of sudden cardiac arrest -- amounting to nearly 700 deaths per day, according to the Heart Association.
Many of those deaths could be prevented if someone nearby had known CPR, the association stressed.
Cardiac arrest can occur from drowning, suffocation, electrocution, trauma or an allergic reaction, as well as heart disease.
About 50,000 or more lives could be saved each year with the "Chain of Survival" links in place, the AHA said.
They include: quick calls to 911, prompt bystander CPR, early defibrillation by emergency services, and early administration of advanced cardiac life support by paramedics.
