No files lost in hack attack

No files were lost in last weekend's shutdown of the state Legislature Web site by a group of computer hackers, but the site is not yet back online.

Staff technicians were still working on installing new hard drives that arrived yesterday and hoped to get the Web site functioning this afternoon or at least by Monday, said Carol Taniguchi, assistant Senate clerk.

Because police investigators confiscated the existing hard drives as evidence, new equipment had to be ordered from the mainland. The six new hard drives cost $4,300, Taniguchi said.

The Legislature's Web site and other government sites throughout the nation were struck down by a group of hackers calling themselves "Pentaguard."

Leeward ocean shuttle planned for summer

State ferry service between Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor and Honolulu Harbor has been suspended, but the Department of Transportation is hoping to start ocean commuter service from two other Leeward points this summer.

The WikiWiki Ferry boat will be put into dry dock for maintenance after its last voyage from Kalaeloa today, according to a release.

The boat will be used on a route between Middle Loch and Honolulu Harbor beginning at the end of June, if the state receives Navy approval. Service between Iroquois Point and Honolulu Harbor is scheduled to begin in July.

The WikiWiki Ferry was put into service Oct. 18 as a one-year trial demonstration project to study the feasibility of a ferry system.

Tobacco funds to help prevent child abuse

Gov. Ben Cayetano has signed into law a $250,000 appropriation for the Hawaii Children's Trust Fund from the Hawaii Tobacco Settlement Special Fund.

It will be used for community activities to prevent child abuse and neglect.

The 22 bills Cayetano signed into law included expanding prohibition of street solicitation of prostitution from Waikiki to other parts of Honolulu County. The bill denies bail to people arrested for violating terms of bail or probation.

The governor also signed a law to create a watershed protection board under the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. The board will develop a plan to protect, preserve and enhance important watershed areas.

Star-Bulletin graphic wins 'Best of the West'

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin has won first place in the "Best of the West" journalism contest for an informational graphic that ran Nov. 4, following the shooting at the Xerox office building.

The winning entry, by graphic artist David Swann and assistant managing editor Michael Rovner, was praised by the judge, Bob Rose, senior editor for production and presentation at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

"There is not a wasted word, line or color here. It spares us the color or typography that overpowered other graphics."

The Star-Bulletin graphic beat out 52 other entries in the category, from states throughout the West. Second place in the category went to The (Portland) Oregonian, and third place was won by the Contra Costa Times in California.

Best of the West, run by First Amendment Funding Inc., is an Arizona nonprofit corporation.
