KCC
Cora Yamagata is among the Choreographic Project participants.

Dance Feast offers
yummy array of styles

THERE are some who shun the traditional aerobic workout in favor of a more aesthetic form of body conditioning, the dance. But, oh, the choices! You've got your salsa, swing, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, tango and much more.

"Some people fish around until they find something they like," says dancer Mimi Wisnosky.

That process can take years. But Wisnosky and some of her peers have found a way to condense that search into a week. She's a co-director of Dance Feast 2000, a unique and delectable "buffet," that allows anyone to quickly sample an array of styles through workshops, all in one place, at Kapiolani Community College.

KCC
The Choreographic Project launches
dance in new directions.

The week starts Saturday, with hour-and-a-half workshops from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Maile building. The day starts with hula with instruction by Leimomi Ho; West African dance taught by Evelyne Raposo; Balinese dance with Koming Hood, Chinese dance with Diane Letoto; Samoan dance with Aigaeva Tanielu; and tango with Gloria and Claudio. The fee for one workshop is $12. Additional workshops are $9 each.

Classes in Middle Eastern dance, hip-hop, tap, salsa, swing, modern, ballet, jazz and body conditioning based on the Joseph Pilates method will be offered between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. June 5 to 9. Call KCC at 734-9211 for schedules. Prices range from $14 for Thursday-Friday sessions in salsa, ballet basics or jazz dance, to $35 for five days of belly dancing.

The Feast will conclude with the Choreographic Project in which eight choreographers selected by the Hawaii State Dance Council will create a new work from the theme "Milestone."

An audience will be allowed to view the works in progress 7:30 p.m. June 10 and 2 p.m. June 11 at the KCC Chapel. Admission is $12.
