Four who killed
Kaneohe Marine
sent to prison

Question: What ever happened to the four Marines found guilty of the May 7, 1996, murder of Marine Lance Cpl. Juan Ramon Guerrero?

Answer: Four Marines pleaded guilty at December 1996 and January 1997 court-martials to killing Guerrero, a 20-year-old fellow Kaneohe-based Marine, and dumping his body at Nuuanu Pali Drive.

Alejandro Soto, 26, of Puerto Rico; Darryl Antle, 25, of Russel Springs, Ky., and Mike Pereira, 26, of Haywood Calif., were all convicted of premeditated murder and received life sentences for their roles in the execution-style slaying. Bill Baer, 24, of Bedford, Pa., was sentenced to 25 years for unpremeditated murder.

Soto, Antle, Pereira and Baer were all sent to the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Under military rules, all the men will be eligible for a parole hearing 10 years after sentencing. They could have received the death penalty, but their sentences were reduced in exchange for pleading guilty.

No motive for the killing was given, but investigators believe it may have been over a $50 debt or a perceived slight to Pereira's family.
