McLachlin to retire
By Dave Reardon
from La Pietra
Star-BulletinBeth McLachlin is retiring after 23 years as athletic director at Hawaii School for Girls at La Pietra. But she remains a literal driving force.
"I'm still going to drive the van to take students to field trips," McLachlin said. "My finger will be in there, but not as much. I'll be able to spend time with my family now."
McLachlin, 50, will also continue to teach career counseling and physical education at the school. She also remains state high school volleyball coordinator.
"I probably won't miss anything, because I will still be there. I'll see the girls' successes as they improve as athletes," McLachlin said. "The only thing I will miss will be the 60 hours a week."
McLachlin said no successor has been named, and that she will not be involved in selecting one.
The swim team turned in the school's brightest athletic achievement during McLachlin's tenure. Led by Diane Williams, HSG was second in the state in 1985 and '86.
"It was amazing, considering our school only has 130 kids, watching our four-girl team do so well."
McLachlin did pretty well as an athlete herself.
She was the U.S. Olympic volleyball team captain in 1976. She also was an alternate on the 1968 team, a member of the World Games team in 1970 and Pan American Games team in 1975.
McLachlin was an All-American for the University of Hawaii in 1974 and '75, and is a member of the school's athletic hall of honor.
